Classism in America
yesterday, my wife was telling me a conversation she had with another mom at the playground.
we live in a middle class planed community with apts, condos, townhouses, and single homes. there's a large playground nearby that's really well made and attracts many kids and moms. been there many times with my kid. it would seem that moms hang out (cliques?) based on what strollers and clothes they and their kids wear. i never thought about it but none of them struck me as being rich or well off. guess u're in crowd if u have nice strollers and wear clothes bought from dept stores and gap/banana republic (always thought of gap/banana repub clothes as overpriced crap that i buy on clearance as dont give a crap clothing to wear).
wtf. i know that classism exists in america. but now we have classism among middle class ppl too. this is so un american. dont bode well for egalitarian america. guess country is drifting into stratification and seperation. guess i might be a fool on the hill thinking it's alright.....

One of my friends has two kids and she commented about this local mothers club she just joined. She noted how some mothers commented about her simple stroller because it wasn't fancy. She had a stroller that looked something like this.

I think this is worse in the middle class towns with a large number of immigrated people. They want to show off the money they made..or they want to look like they have a lof $$. O_O anyway, every time i see these korean ajummas with large strollers that cost $1,000 plus, i LOL cuz those things are super heavy and not so convenient...i don't know how they load up those strollers in their cars.

Dude, first thing women notice are the brands on the strollers. McLaren, Bugaboo, Quinny etc. some freakin' women size each other's economic position that way, akin to how some men may size each other up by the car, size and location of home etc.
Why? I don't know. But I will tell you that sometimes associating with people of different wealth levels can lead to uncomfortable situations, such as going out and paying dutch at restaurants, going out shopping together, even choosing pre-school based on tuition levels etc. Unless there's an unusually strong bond, these things tend to distance people's relationships over time.
Perhaps this is a natural phenomena of a capitalistic society

dunno about mothers, but girls with more of an education do seem to be less concerned with class and money for the sake of showing it off...

this is why I hate people and do my hardest not to associate with so many people. I just like to lay low and live a stress free lifestyle. I will wear a white t-shirt and swim trunks to that park and, if some of the mothers have a problem with it then fk them too! yes...i'll probably start crying like a b*tch if they scold me, but I will flip them the birdie, that's for sure!
I no longer have to go to fancy restaurants or bars just to prove my worth. that's why I love my wife so much--she doesn't do that power struggle crap with me or will even shop at goodwill if she has too. love ya, babes!
anyway...what the sh*t were we talking about? oh yeah...humans are b*tches!

Although I don't agree with how people judge, what's un-american about it? The good part about this country (or American-part) is that via multiple ways you can change your class status. Yes, it's hard and requires a bit of luck, but it's possible. Not sure if you have the same opportunities in other countries.
Now, what you do when you change your status is up to the individual. *shrug* I was raised lower-middle class and now I'm probably classified as upper class, but feel comfortable dressing down.

class levels exist in every social group. Even among the poorest people they have their own social hierarchy.

there is always structure in everything. even among ugly people...the ugly ones don't like to hang with real fugly ones, and the uglies look down on the fuglies. but what the uglies don't realize is that there are the good-looking people above them.
